I have read on numerous occasions coaches say that rookie TEs rarely do much because a TE's job is so complex in today's game. They have to know both the run and pass game inside out as they are keys to both.
I think ANY Rams O player who was a rookie last year is still mostly a rookie this year. If there was any doubt before now about how Fisher's O coaches were simply horrendous and had no idea how to train and develop young players, the night and day difference that McVay brings, and its results, are crystal clear and all doubt has faded.
As a result Higbee didn't progress as much as he could have last year. So this year is very much like a do-over rookie year for him. It seems to me that he is thinking too much and not just playing. He has the physical ability. What we're seeing right now is the inconsistency typical of a young player. Goodness, we're even seeing that "young player" inconsistency from the more highly developed Kupp who has dropped some passes.
This is still the 2nd youngest team in the NFL. And there will be growing pains. Thank gosh we now have adult leadership to show the kids how to do it.
