I had this feeling that Sean didn't run the ball enough and feed Gurley
Oh TA... smh hes running out of time. They gave him some touches but he failed to even stress the defense. TA must just be awful in that slot. I just can't understand why its so hard to get him in space
I sort of agree that they could have run Gurley just a tad more; And it is odd that these came on some traditional run downs, but I was surprised that Sean didn't stick with a bit of what looked to be working. The Rams, after getting nailed back at the 2, come out and run Todd.
T.Gurley up the middle to LA 8 for 6 yards
Then, he unwisely, imo, goes to the pass. I mean this is a ball sitting at the 8, and your RB just bruised out 6 yards. To me, you run the ball and get another 3 just by the nature of the beast. Set up what ought to be a short and makeable 3rd down or a natural first just cuz it's an area of lower your pads and punish out 4 yards.
Instead
J.Goff pass incomplete short middle to 18-C.Kupp.
Then, Sean goes to the pass again. And Sammie doesn't get anywhere near the sticks in the middle of the field.
Goff pass short middle to 12-S.Watkins to LA 10 for 2 yards
One negative on Tavon Austin that I kind of need to come back, too. I sort of like the jet sweeps, and when they do use Austin there was a moment that he appeared to be a step from success.
However, on one of the few plays he was in on, the protection breaks down, and Goff spin rolls to his right, and there is Tavon. Tavon has an instant recognition factor he has to react, too.
A. He can try to block the defender that's fronting him. Tavon is awfully small, and the angle is more of clipping situation and not a high reward play for him.
B. He can use his speed and wits, and find an open spot for Goff to get him the ball. From my spot, it looked like he could come back into the middle of the field and towards Goff, and provide a big target. Instead he freezes, and does neither, and Goff tosses it away. As a "vet" and needing to use his brains to break plays open for himself and the offense, I sure would have enjoyed seeing him respond more intuitively to the situation.
it's kind of why this is not just a season for the young Qb and head coach to get in a groove, but for some of guys to sort out their roles, too.
