I was reading Bill Simmons a few days ago and he made a great point.
Why not add an 18th week to the season (if you remember, the NFL use to have two bye weeks, just do it again) and make the one bye before you play a Thursday night game. That way teams get rest before and after.
You do away (partially) with really bad football on short weeks, you add another week of football for the owners (yes, less games each week, but still a decent number and more they can showcase).
Makes too much sense to me, so the owners and players probably don't want it....
