If the Rams have to pay him that $5M then they only save $3M by cutting him after 2017. So he may be safe for 2018 as well.
That $5 mil. bonus is part of his guaranteed amount. There is no way to avoid that hit. So you are correct in that they will only save $3 mil. next year if they cut him.
Depending on how productive he is this year, that may not be worth it.
The most likely way they get rid of his salary is if he's productive this year thus making him tradeable next year. A team would absorb $8 mil. in salary for a productive player.
