As a lifelong Pirates' fan ... I remember, *very* well, the day the Buccos stole Madlock from the Giants. I think Eddie Whitson was involved. Would have to check.

Anyway ... I was a senior in high school that year ... and we were playing a blood rival on the Friday they played Game Three of the World Series at Three Rivers. One of our trainers had a transistor radio and, every time I'd come off the field, he'd give me an update. I remember we got beat that night, and do did the Buccos.

I was more upset about the Pirates.

A couple years later, met Willie Stargell at a function here in Iowa. Can't remember why he was in town. But I had a hardback copy of a book on the 1979 Pirates. He wasn't intending to sign autographs at this deal - and I'm not an autograph fan, myself - but he signed the book for me.
