Sammy has NO leverage...this is essentially his contract year.
The only leverage he has is on his next contract.

So IF I'm Sammy I would want to ball out this year and get a contract that reflected that. Not one coming off an injury prone year.
And IF I'm the Rams I would want a looksie as well.
Gaines was essentially going to be 3rd on the depth chart. Nothing really lost there.
To ME if you're the Rams you know the talent you just acquired and the capitol you spent to get him. Why not extend now while everything is (seemingly) ammeccable?
Simply put...the Rams want to wait and see if Watkins can stay healthy (i.e. at least 14 games). They've already extended him "good will" by trading for him. If he does his part, the Rams will respond with a reasonable offer to keep him here.
