Cunningham is a good guy on the team, but greatly overrated by fans here. There was one thread a while back where fans were commenting on him being better than Gurley and had a knack of seeing the hole like Marshall Faulk.
Of all the backup backs over the years, I think he falls in the middle, despite being very reliable because he lacks play making ability.
I take Holcomb, Canidate, Gordon, Hill, Lee over Cunningham
I would take Cunningham over these guys though Moore, Henley, Watson, Brian Leonard.
The guy he kind of reminds me of is Arlene Harris, but I would take Cunningham over Harris as well.
So he is kind of middle of the road backup, but to me, I would not want him as a #2 guy because the defense has no fear of him and can structure their defense to do whatever they want when he is in the game.
He is a #3 back guy and money can be saved by using a mid round pick to be that #3 back. There is about a 50% chance that a random mid round pick can deliver more big plays than Cunningham. There are intangibles though unrelated to play that the Rams may miss. Hard to evaluate that part without being there.
My biggest problem with Cunningham is lack of upside.
1) 0 touchdowns in last 2 years
2) 3 plays of runs with 20 or more yards in last 2 years.
So about once a year you may get a momentum changing play from him.
