Adam Schefter has an idea for the Washington Redskins, and it involves trading Kirk Cousins.
Speaking to Chris Cooley on 980AM, the ESPN NFL insider opined that the Redskins would be wide to deal their starting quarterback on the heels of his decision not to sign a long-term contract with the team.
“I don’t believe they will do this, but the best thing the Redskins could do would be trade him,” Schefter said. “Trade him.”
Although Cousins reiterated his desire to stay with the Redskins beyond the 2017 season, there's no guarantee(beyond the team issuing another tag) that he will. In fact, the odds point to an inevitable departure. With that in mind, it would make sense for the Redskins to try and get something in return for the former fourth-round pick, as teams around the NFL would likely be interested in acquiring his services with a view to signing up at the end of the season.
“The best thing to do in my mind -- I don’t think they’re going to do it -- is to trade him to a team that you know could sign him, a team that’s willing to make that trade,” Schefter said. “Just like in the NBA, we see those trades all the time. Paul George to Oklahoma City, you think Oklahoma City knows that it can sign Paul George? I don’t know. But I’ll tell you this, I’ll bet you the Rams think that they could sign Kirk Cousins.”
But what could the Redskins receive for a player on the final year in of contract? For Schefter, it's more than one might think, including two former No. 1 overall picks -- one of which being Pro Bowler Matthew Stafford.
“The only places you can trade him are to places that truly believe and think that they’re going to be able to sign him long-term,” he said. “Who are those places? Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan and the state of Michigan, where he’s from.”
