Here's my impression of TG's performance last year:
He lost faith in the team and the offense, and therefore lost focus and commitment. He was disinterested in grinding out a couple yards when he had no faith in the drive as a whole.
.
He may have eventually ended up that way (which does not speak well of him). I assume you're right in fact. But it's not the whole story.
He started out poorly too. That's even when the Rams were 3-1 going into the Buffalo game.
Reports were widespread that he simply did not dedicate himself in the off-season the way he did in 2015. That's not only physical workouts, but IMO, from the looks of things, it included staying on top of a new offense. In terms of not dedicating himself, he more or less admitted that when he said that he got started on training sooner this year than he did last year. I read that as defensive understatement on his part.
In those first 5 games he had 216 yards on 84 carries, for 54 yards a game and just under 2.6 a carry.(and it;s only that high because he average 3.16 against Tampa).
A lot went wrong in 2016, as I keep saying, and maybe Gurley reacted negatively to some of those things (though again, if so, I think that speaks poorly of him.) But he too was also one of the many things that went wrong, and that goes all the way back to the start of the off-season, apparently.
