Well put. I agree. There';s a 1000 reasons that the W/L does not tell you any kind of story.
There can be several teams with the same record, all for entirely different reasons. Let;'s say several teams went 8-8. One could be underachieving. One could be overachieving. One could be a good team that got undercut by "whole unit" level actually crippling injuries. One could be a stocked team that's poorly coached. One could be an average team that's brilliantly coached. One could have a rookie qb doing better than rookie qbs normally do. One could have a vet who has suddenly declined. Or any combination of all of the above and more.
Taken in itself the record never tells you anything. The record is a symptom. But of what? Unless you look you do not know.
