So are you saying that, from a philosophical standpoint, it’s better for an NFL team to spread the wealth across several average players than generously reward superstars and fill in with young players on rookie contracts? It’s definitely a different perspective than the one I hold and it’s possible I’m wrong on this.
I haven’t looked at how all winning teams manage their salary caps other than NE but my instincts tell me that they generally have a handful of standout performers at key positions and then fill in with inexpensive labor everywhere else. One of these times someone should do an in-depth study on this.
The Pareto principle also tells me that my gut on this is accurate. 80% of good effects are gonna come from 20% of the players. I believe in paying the 20%.
Interestingly enough, 20% of a 53 man roster equals 10 players which is close to the 8-10 guys that Zn says half the cap is used on.
