I think Les once called Martz the Buddy Ryan of offensive football. I'd say that's a perfect description. Both of them stubborn as could be. Convinced no one could crack their code. And, once their code was cracked, they really had no Plan B.
For a hot minute there ... Martz was on top of the world when it came to offensive football. He seemed to be the next-in-line of the great innovators - from Clark Shaughnessy to Paul Brown to Sid Gillman to Al Davis to Bill Walsh.
Now, unfortunately, he's just kind of a fascinating footnote in NFL history.
