TE is well known to be a tough position to have first year impact. It's possible of course, sure, and yes this year's group is stellar. But I still doubt any TE we draft will be a year one impact player for us. Engram, for example, who I see mocked to us all the time. He's not going to be plugged right in and excel, dude will need some time to adjust so he'd be a depth guy for at least half the season and that's if Higbee doesn't run with the job opportunity.
Good point. TE's do take a little longer to develop. However, I'm not operating under the assumption that they must have first year impact. Why are you so certain that the Rams are?
Besides that's a pretty high hurdle for any 2nd round pick at any position. The reality is, the overwhelming majority of rookies just simply don't have first year impact.
This is McVay's first year. He's got a little time.
I say it's wise to play to the strength of the draft and select a TE from a historically deep class. Early or late doesn't matter. It's wherever the value is good.
Also, I was comparing any newly drafted TE to Higbee. Higs is not very far up on the development curve himself. If another guy came in that had significantly more talent, it's possible the disparity in talent more than makes up for the lessor development.
