Arguably a quick release can produce velocity too.

A good case in point was Bulger. Bulger didn't have a WEAK arm by any means, but it wasn't a cannon. But he had a very quick release. He could throw those deep out and deep dig lasers as well as anyone.

I think Goff has arm talent, for sure...it's there, it's visible. But I really don't know how much of it is arm strength, having a quick release, or some kind of combination.

I've seen everyone of his throws from college to the NFL. Goff has never given me the impression that the velocity/speed on his throws was ever close to eye popping.

There are some throws that he makes in the 10, 15 and even 30 yard range that have very good speed/velocity but most of them have been in the middle areas of the field. (as opposed to sideline throws when he's shaded to the opposite side of the hash marks or throwing across his body.

His deep out patterns are nothing special and his 35 - 40 plus yard deep balls are often times under thrown because he launches the ball a half second late. If he had better arm talent and extra zip/velocity on this throws this wouldn't be the case.

To me, he doesn't have the arm strength/velocity to throw the deep fly/skinny post patterns a half second late like quarterbacks with big arms can get away with.

McVay, LaFleur and Olsen need to work on him with his release timing with deep out patterns and the depth areas of the field where his lack of arm strength or velocity are lacking.

(Sure he has a good arm strength but far from a gun or any kind of special speed/velocity to make all the difficult throws without compensation from the timing of his release.... at least from what my eyes tell me)

He had problems under throwing wide open deep balls at Cal even though they were completed because the WR adjusted by slowing down to make the catch.

His pocket presence at Cal along with his ability to adjust his throwing speeds on many of his throws (an issue many NFL QB's suffer from) is what I liked about him. His quick release and accuracy when he's in a rhythm was the other.

I never thought he had strong arm or an special velocity traits that separated him from Wentz or past top 10 rated quarterbacks going into the draft.

ve·loc·i·ty the speed of something in a given direction. (there are directions/areas of the football field where his lack of velocity needs to be compensated by the timing of his release.
