They could have kept Barnes and waited until they signed Groh before they dumped him. Cap space was not the issue. They had plenty of cap space to sign Groh.
Teams make calculations as to what a certain player at a certain position is worth to them. Clearly Groh wasn't worth any more or they would have offered more. Demhoff isn't stupid about how this works. He's done this a long time.
A team is simply not going to reel in a fish every time they throw their line in the water.
