It was a helluva lot more than just a cost cutting move. It was more of a "we can and must do better" move.
McVay and co looked at the roster and prioritized positions they wanted to upgrade commensurate with what was available in free agency and the draft.
They needed to make some roster changes, trades, cuts in order to make the changes they sought.
There is no there there.
Sometimes a player is a cap casualty and that's all there is.
And this is about thinking a position is good enough to win with, not championing "my boy".
There are a number of successful o-lines in the league with JAG's at center.
The Rams felt they could replace that position on the cheap, which is why they low balled Groy.
They miscalculated.
