There's another Warner-related story that I love that I had almost forgotten about.
It was the morning after the Rams beat Tampa Bay in the NFC championship game in Jan. 2000. I had taken the day off - to celebrate the Rams' win. But we also had someone coming in to do some electrical rewiring in our basement. Again ... we live in Cedar Rapids, which is Kurt's hometown. Blah, blah.
So, around mid-morning, a contractor stops at the house to do the work. I walk him down into our basement, which was totally decked out in Rams' - and Warner - memorabilia. Totally decked out. Still is.
He's looking at this and asking, 'Is this legit?' I told him all about this long-term love-sick affair I've had being a Rams' fan for almost thirty years. As he's working, we talk about the game and all that.
When he finally gets done - took about ninety minutes or so - I ask him if he had a receipt he could give me or if we could be billed.
He tells me, 'No charge.'
I was just totally shocked. We were talking about some substantial work he'd done. In the range of $500.
Turns out this fella was a subcontractor who was working for ... drum roll ... Kurt's dad, Gene. I guess he had called Gene at some point and told him about this lunatic's basement with all the Rams' / Warner paraphernalia ... and Gene told him to do the work for free.
You just can't make this stuff up.
