I can understand an argument for Belichick

February 07, 2017 05:38AM
But, imo ... Lombardi remains *the* measuring stick in terms of pro coaches.

He spent ten years as an NFL head coach ... and won five championships.

Also ... Lombardi was 9-1 in the playoffs. His only loss was his first ... the 1960 NFL championship game against the Eagles.

But there's so much more to what he accomplished in that time than can be revealed in mere statistics.

I think it was Willie Wood who was talking about the impact Lombardi had on his life. This is years and years and years later, after Lombardi died. Wood, and I paraphrase, said that he thought about his father, who'd passed away, a lot. But he thought about Lombardi every day of his life.

Read When Pride Still Mattered by David Maraniss.

It is a brilliantly-written book that provides an amazing perspective on the guy - as a coach and person.
