He has a $10M salary cap hit in 2017. It's not like he's a QB or other highly coveted skill position player.
No one would trade significant draft assets while picking up that salary for a LB. It would be much smarter for any team interested in a LB to simply buy one in free agency and avoid having to part with draft picks.
Maybe we'd get a future 7th for him. But IMO it's more likely that he's not tradeable at this point.
Because he's a perfect tool for Greg Williams defense. There are no LB's available that are like him. There are no other teams that have money like Cleveland. Cleveland has a need, the DC, the trade chips, the enormous amount of cash available and the need to spend it.
Oh, Greg Williams may have interest in him but why would he bid against himself? If only one team has interest, they’re not gonna offer much. Besides it’s pretty much unprecedented for a team to take on $10M in salary while giving up a draft pick as high as a 4th for a non-premium position.
Also, GW is really adaptable in his scheme. I believe you wrongly assume that he couldn’t find another option for much cheaper in free agency.
Cle. is run by “moneyball” Paul DePodesta. They’re into getting undervalued assets, not overvalued ones just b/c they can. The fact they have the money and the need doesn't change the overall philosophy on how to build the team.
