I'd consider deep passing to be 20+ yards down the field and Goff/Keenum combined for 53 of those while Cousins had 82, which was 3rd most in the entire league.
Interesting distinction and worth discussing. Naming 20+ yarders as deep is a PFF stat.
I consider deep passing to be 31+ yards.
I do 20 yarders as part of the medium/deep medium stat, which includes 11-30 yarders.
The Rams have been rather lacking in that area for years now.
But they have also always been active in the 31+ yard range. More than most. The exception was Goff.
Doing it my way actually gives a clearer picture of what the Rams have been doing, since they tend to not use the medium/deep medium ranges, BUT it was part of who they were and what they did to take deep shots in the 31+ range. Taking shots was just part of their identity (again, with the exception of Goff).
The issue with stats is, PFF only gives you the 20+ stats. ESPN splits can't give you 20+...You could break up ESPN stats differently I suppose. YOu could do 11-20 yarders AND 21-30 yarders AND 31+ yarders. The reason I did it the way I did it was precisely to separate the 31+ yarders, because as I said, that was what the Rams were doing. Under Fisher they would be less active in the 11-30 yard ranges but more active than most teams in the league (until Goff) in the 31+ yard range. That's just who they were on offense.
Another version is to do it as passing plays of 25 yards or more (that's Stats LLC) but then it's not clear whether they distinguish between the ball in the air and YAC. They also only count completions, and don't give you attempts, the way the other 2 do.
If you do THAT stat (here: [
stats.washingtonpost.com] ) ...then... --->
Cousins leads the league with 44. Goff and Keenum combined have 27. That would rank 14th in the NFL. The problem with doing it like that is, CK was throwing them at a higher rate than Goff. CK has 22 in 9 games...divided and extrapolated across 16 games, that's 39 which would have ranked 4th in the NFL.
My way of putting this, I stand behind. If the Rams throw like Washington did last year, then they will cut back on the 31+ yarders and throw more in the medium/deep medium range (11-30). Then if that's true they will also show up higher ranked in both PFF stats (20+ yarders) and Stat LLC stats (25+ yarders).
