Supposedly the defense was lethargic this season and resting on their laurels.

Wade is almost 70 yrs old and they felt that the defenses lack of energy was a direct reflection to Wade's lack of energy.

So they wanted to go younger and that was the plan all along after not extending his contract last season.

Denver's Defense resting on their laurels after it carried them to a championship victory? They were still ranked 4th in yards against so that's not a terrible drop off considering most Superbowl hangovers.

Wade doesn't have youth on his side and could very easily retire after the 2018 season ends. Turns 70 on 06/21/2017

Elway wanted to go younger at the DC position and decided not to extend his contract (raise his salary on 2015 merits) is understandable in a business sense when you consider his age and the infatuation/hiring of Vance Joseph.

Wade is a unique DC and his age means he's likely not going to be on the LA coaching staff for more than a couple/few years.

The assistants chosen to work under Phillips become even more important, when you factor in that he's a short term selection that is bringing in a brand new scheme compared to what the Rams players have been accustomed to under GW.

There could be some interesting personnel turnover on defense in the next 2 off-seasons.
