I take it as a sign of politeness and respect.
An old school kinda thing. Like making good eye contact when speaking. Firm handshake. Listening when being spoken to and without interrupting, etc...

One would have to look up from their electronic device to do that (or remove their headphones).
I take it more as a studied approach to communication when communication is perceived as a tool needed to achieve certain goals.
McVay made communication skills part of the job as a coach. They're a means to an end. And effective ones too or we wouldn't be having this conversation.
