Actual free agency doesn't start until March 9

The Jan 2 date is valid, but here's the catch ... players on teams right now that are under their final contract are still under contract until March 9th, hence they are not free agents.

Thus the big names are not available until then.

Jan 2nd is only for "Street FA's" who are currently not under contract with any team. March 9 is the date for FA's who actually have real value, especially along the OL. There aren't any "good" LT's unsigned at present.
