Like the entire season, game vs. 49ers turns into a nightmare for Rams, fans

By VINCENT BONSIGNORE / STAFF COLUMNIST

LOS ANGELES – The present was wrapped perfectly and placed just right under the tree. And as it sat there beckoning, it took everyone’s discipline not to mad rush it and rip it open.

Not to say it would make up for the dreadful year everyone has endured, but a nice gesture is a nice gesture. The Rams owe everyone that much, at least.

It’s been a dreadful year for all involved, the fans included. What began as a fairy tale 11 months ago is now a reoccurring nightmare that comes knocking at the door night after night after terrifying night.

What’s done is done in this unmitigated disaster of a first season back in Los Angeles. We all get it. And by now we’ve begrudgingly accepted it. The Rams are finally back home. For now that’s just going to have to do.

Still, nothing like something nice and new and shiny emerging from a gift-wrapped box on Christmas Eve.

If nothing else, to take everyone’s mind off the misery. Maybe even hold us over to a better time when scoreboards smile down upon us rather than mock us and the product on the field elicits pride rather than scorn.

So there the present sat Saturday, just waiting to be opened as the Rams took a two-touchdown lead against the San Francisco 49ers.

It was their biggest lead of the season. In the fourth quarter no less. Against their bitter rivals from Northern California.

It was shaping up to be a pretty good Christmas after all.

Bah Humbug.

Silly us, getting our hopes up like that.
