I think they have some good, viable pieces to develop with. But as a unit they're just not good. As of a couple weeks ago PFF had them 26th. FootballOutsiders has them 26th in run blocking and 25th in pass blocking this week. They were a mess vs. New England (who's front seven is average).
Yes but it is a front 7 that can execute a gameplan designed to confuse a rookie qb.
Hence the "everyone looked bad against THEM" thing.
They looked better against Miami which actually has a top DL.
Hence my view that what really happened with the Patz was less the OL failing Goff than it being the other way around. A confused Goff didn't do what a vet qb would and could to make things easier on the OL.
Rankings? Enh. They are seldom contextual. Part of the season this OL had a rookie qb, the other part of this season this OL had a veteran qb who was nevertheless limited in the kinds of throws you could expect from him.
I say watch Goff gain in experience and confidence and the OL suddenly looks better. And when that happens, the people who do the rankings, who cannot or anyway do not calculate these kinds of things, will mysteriously start grading the OL higher.
That's my theory, and I is standin by it.
