... with the same brush.
Each one of those people you name is different. To say, 'Well, they were all bullies,' is just not accurate, Not at all.
Perhaps the word 'bully' impacted your sensibilities in some way. Okay.
How about all of those guys are 'authoritarians?' Is that less offensive?
Hey ... I'd add Vermeil to your list. I'd add Belichick. I'd add Chuck Noll. I'd add lots of guys.
But what all the successful PRO coaches have, whether they are 'player's coaches' or authoritarians is the ability to RELATE to players where those players ARE. Pro players are NOT one-size-fits all. It's well-known that none of these guys treated all their players the same. They knew who they needed to ride; they knew who needed to be patted on the back. Vince Lombardi did NOT treat Paul Hornung the same way he treated Henry Jordan. Vince Lombardi did NOT treat Willie Wood the same way he treated Carrol Dale. Bill Parcells did NOT treat Lawrence Taylor the same way he treated Mark Bavaro. Chuck Noll did NOT treat Joe Greene the same way he treated Terry Bradshaw. Belichick does NOT treat Tom Brady the same way he treats Rob Gronkowski. And so on and so on and so on ...
Nick Saban is exactly where he needs to be to be successful. He is a one-size-fits-all coach. He can be that at Alabama.
He can't be in the pro game.
If he becomes Rams' coach ... so be it. I'm too old to get too tied up in knots over stuff I cannot control and doesn't really impact me at all.
But ... I will not be at all surprised if and when that relationship goes the same way it did with him at Miami.
He's NOT a pro coach. Period.
