For those about to jump off the ledge, or abandoning ship, or
(well - choose your own metaphor) - a few things about this signing to take solace in...
It has been widely reported that the contract was agreed upon in the
preseason - and signed "during" the season. It's not like it was signed yesterday.
So obviously a tentative deal had been in place. My hunch is it was probably signed around the time the Rams record was 3 and 1 - when they were likely feeling pretty good about the direction things were headed in...
Secondly - it is not entirely clear HOW this news got out today. Was there an official Rams announcement? Maybe - but I haven't seen one. It was just
"reports are that Fisher has signed an extension" or
"It was confirmed" in the media - not
"The Rams have announced..."So this may have just been damage control on the part of the Rams to leak it this way (perhaps thinking that the backlash would be WORSE after a few more (likely) losses) - or it could have been from Fisher's people - or it could be something else...but in any case, the contract was apparently not done recently!
So everything (mostly disastrous) that has happened since CAN AND WILL likely affect Fisher's future.
Demoff even said so himself in a recent interview. He said (paraphrasing) - "The last five games, and how the team responds, will show us if we have the proper pieces in place to move forward..."
Does that sound like something that is guaranteed - or written in stone?
Finally - without knowing the details, a contract "extension" doesn't mean much in and of itself, other than IF things go well - they want Fisher to continue as head coach.
It could, however, have any number of clauses, stipulations, or even "outs." And even if it doesn't - he can fired AT ANY TIME.
Employment contracts are almost always "at will" - meaning EITHER party can sever the agreement at any time.
Kroenke may have to pay someone who no longer works for him - but that happens ALL THE TIME in the NFL! Think of all the "guaranteed" money teams pay players even after they are released or traded!
Does anyone really think Stan is gonna risk ALL of the Los Angeles goodwill towards his team (not to mention the resulting marketability and future PROFIT) if this thing completely tanks under Fisher because he'd have to eat some money short-term by firing him??
So it's not etched in stone.
Yes - Jeff FIsher has a "contract" in place to be head coach of the Rams for two more years. And yes - considering his career record of mediocrity, the fact that they would even consider extending this
Titan of Futility before the season had even started is ludicrous to many of us - and to many others throughout the football world.
But it doesn't mean we are definitely stuck with him for the next two years.
So take solice in that.
