The zombies of that show are a metaphor, representing the apocalypse - or the end of civilization as we know it.
It is a drama about humanity, morality and how different humans react to impossible situations. The zombies are just a thematic backdrop.
With your generally groovy level of cultural awareness - how have you never seen this show?
It has been the #1 rated show on TV for sometime now, and though it can be inconsistent, it's generally VERY well-done. Great writing, occasionally brilliant acting, etc.
It has been my favorite TV show for the last several years, in fact.
