Maybe for the same reason Martz wasn't called by the other 31 head coaches. your suggestion of "ego" is plausible
Personally, I think that if Martz was a GM/Head-Coach on a team with a "hand's off" owner then he would be very successful. .... but those opportunities are too few and too far between.
