Actually that first Rams drive seem to have hope and then they went back to the proven and true 6 plays. I know they ran a few more, but the problem with the Rams as the announcers kept saying is the other team knows there are many plays that the Rams do not run. The defense doesn't have to be concerned about too much.
Hence you seem swarms of defensive players around Gurley and Austin when they touch the ball.
