in any event, did it work last year? while giving up a fair amount of yards, the rams ended up ranked 12th in scoring defense (with several key players sidelined). their is obviously room for improvement but its not like the scheme was an abject failure.
The question of did it work last year is a non-starter for me. They simply do not have this year what they had last year. McLeod was not a box safety. He wasn’t the traditional FS but he was a lot closer to that than he was to a SS. He had good coverage skills and frequently played nickel CB dating back to college.
Alexander has no coverage skills and is lost in space. Granted what GW states that he wants most at the position is a sound hitter/tackler who can play very deep as the last line of defense. But you need some instincts too. I’m not sure Mo has that. IMO, they are taking a great risk this year at that position.
Because of this, the scheme will have to change some this year to compensate for the lack of the same skillsets in the players.
