I always felt James Harris was underutilized and not trusted. He had some really fine games as a passer. His first game as starter after Hadl was traded was a real beauty. Then, the next year, Rams were down by 11 to the Vikes at home, and Shack completes 10 in a row, the last one a beauty to Bob Klein for the win. Then there was a game against Miami where he threw for over 400 yards. The guy had an arm and real talent.
Now I read they did not trust him to change plays at the line. Watching the Rams O in those days was so frustrating because they had so much awesome talent yet they plodded through their games, making a lot of mistakes and punting a lot. Their lack of explosive O was exploited in the playoffs. I always suspected Harris was on a short lease and it was maddening to watch.
I also read that Rams players felt similarly, especially about the coaching and conservative style. The players knew they had a Super Bowl team, and they knew the coaching was holding them back. The article confirmed some of that.
Interesting, also, after Rosenbloom died and there was a new coach and an owner that didn't know how to meddle in coaching decisions yet, that the Rams finally got to the Super Bowl. I bet the players in that locker room were loose, and I bet the tension in the Rams playoff locker rooms from 74-78 could be cut with a knife.
Anyone else feel the same way about those 70s teams??
Definitely a Super Bowl defense. No doubt in my mind about that.
Knox could have done more with Harris throwing to Jessie and Harold Jackson. Only knock I had on Harris is he was excellent with a clean pocket, not such much when pressured. Just didn't have the mobility to improvise when things broke down.
