is the differential in throwing talent between Keenum and Goff.
Keenum is going to have defenses rolling up tight and trying to contain the passing game, and unless he suddenly grows greater arm talent it is going to result in the same old up and down result we have grown used to offensively. Knowing the offense is great, and being able to manage the game through intelligence at the QB position is actually underrated, but at some point the QB still needs to be able to back defenses off and keep them honest in order to sustain good production.
I agree Goff is going to start by week 4. But IMO the decision will be driven by the fact he can back a defense off. We are already seeing it when he comes in the huddle in preseason, teams want to bring the heat because they know he can hurt them. He's already showing that ability to drop dimes downfield, just needs a little more seasoning, particularly with the protections.
Not hating on Case here, either. I mean it is what it is, arm talent and deep ball accuracy at the QB position is going to lead to promotion. I believe Case is a very good backup QB, and if he proves he's a little more than that it's good for us because we will get that early season production from him plus draft pick compensation when he leaves as a FA.
Re: Mannion it's really the same deal. I think he's going to be a backup in this league, but he does have starter ability. What is going to hurt him is his accuracy, the guy is just too inconsistent there. Already he has an INT plus should have another that would have been a pick six. I don't hate the guy, but he's not the dude in the QB room that is worth aligning things behind. If I'm the coach he's in my plans as a backup, and if he comes up on FA thinking he's going to start I'll wish him well.
