Let me just add a note on what I look for.

You stress a defense by occupying safeties. And you do that by having WIDE receivers--not slots--who can beat CBs. That pulls safeties over and back to contain the damage.

The minute you do that, all sorts of things open up in the short middle of the field. Not only can RBs get traction against 7 man boxes, but slots and TEs have room to work.

It has been years since we could do this. Teams feel comfortable covering our wide guys with CBs, and that frees up safeties to crowd the LOS. It's why our running game is erratic even with good talent. It's why slots and TEs are so often collared after very short throws. It's why we can't move the chains or score in the red zone.

Now, please understand, I am not talking about "deep throws." Taking shots beyond, say, 20 yards is OK, but no team actually completes them very often.

I AM talking about routes and throws from about 10 to 20 yards upfield. That's where the real money is, where fine offenses shred defenses. If you can't make those throws and catches, then what you do underneath will wither.

And we haven't had a QB who could make those throws since Sam got hurt 2 years ago. The record strongly suggests that we haven't had the WRs to do this either.
