Ramsey has been a dominant force in camp, as expected. But even he has difficulty in covering rookie Jefferson who is more than holding his own against one of the top CBs in the NFL. You can imagine how Jefferson playing in the slot against a #3 CB will be a huge mismatch the Rams favor. After this performance, there is no way Reynolds is the #3 WR which will give the Rams probably the best trio of WRs in the NFL. Reynolds is improved but IMO not enough to beat out Jefferson, and his drops are a major concern and will ultimately doom his chances next year considering the depth the Rams have behind the #4 WR spot.
Reynolds is in the final year of his rookie contract. He's good enough not to last long as a FA WR and to start as a Y & Z WR on a lot of teams. Right now he's affordable depth during a year where COVID requires depth at all skill positions. IMO if Reynolds signs elsewhere next year it won't impact the Rams and it could give them a mid to late round compensatory pick. Bottom line is if a WR is still playing with inconsistent technique and still dropping passes, it's a legitimate concern and IMO time to move on especially when you have Webster, Edwards and JJ Koski behind him. If the Rams keep 6 WRs on the roster then the question is do you release Reynolds or try to trade him? This would allow them to keep the aforementioned rookies on the active roster without exposing them to waivers. Webster has built on a strong showing last year and looks to be a better option overall at #4 WR than Reynolds. Now add in Winston to the mix with a good resume with big reliable hands who can also play as a returner. The Rams have 4 WRs with better potential and most of all better positional flexibility than Reynolds so I think the handwriting is on the wall if not this year than certainly for next year.
Snead is known for bold moves so unless he thinks they can get a compensatory pick in 2022 for Reynolds he might be better served by perhaps carrying 7 WRs this year and releasing Reynolds if they can't trade him. I think there would be a market for Reynolds for a 4th round pick (the round he was picked in) which is likely to be higher than a compensatory. That is not a high price for a #3 or even #2 WR on some teams.
