Salary cap going forward....and other thoughts

January 19, 2020 03:58AM
I've been wondering if the Rams may be able to sign both Littleton and Fowler. That got me thinking about the new cap that will come into play once the new league contract is signed. I think it's safe to say that there will probably be significant changes with all the new money that will be coming in from new TV deals, etc...

I think there is a good chance that the cap limits will increase significantly. A lot of teams are tight against the cap (including the Rams and Cowboys, both with owners that have a lot to say about how things go) and higher limits would help a lot.

So maybe the Rams signing those big contracts will end up being a good idea. We all know that salaries will keep going up (unless something unexpected comes along) and what look like big numbers now may not look quite as imposing a year from now. It's unfortunate that Gurley has had injury issues ( or whatever the issues actually are!), but I can't say I was unhappy when they signed him to the new contract. Extending Cooks may have been a mistake, but McVay saw him as the guy to take the top off of apposing defenses and again, I liked it at the time. Goff was inevitable. Good quarterbacks get paid, and you have to have one. I like Goff a lot, and I think he'll just keep getting better. His contract will look like a bargain within a year to two.

I can't wait to see how this off season goes! I'm impressed with the Rams front office and the decisions they make. I know a lot of people talk about the mistakes that Snead made before McVay showed up, but I'm sure that Fisher had a lot to say about who was drafted, just as McVay does now. Fisher wanted people to match his system and that's what Snead to him. I have no doubt that Austin and Ogletree were guys Fisher wanted.

Going forward, this will definitely be McVay and Snead's team. I loved Wade and wish him well, but it was probably time for a change. McVay wanted someone that matches his philosophy and it looks like he found him from what I've read. Wade is a great defensive coach (I think the way his defenses played in the Super Bowls, both for the Rams and the Broncos, speak for themselves) but I also think the Rams defense will be even better going forward.

OK, just my thoughts going forward. Can't wait for free agency and the draft!
