Just posting this for whatever its worth... I happen to work with someone I will not name that was an NFL player for 10 years, played in two Super Bowls and also personally knows Wade. In fact Wade cut him his last summer in the NFL (which he says he still brings up when they see each other) and they later coached together for several years. Good guy and while I only see him once a year or so he is always willing to talk a little NFL over a drink.
Anyway, we talked today and I happened to ask his opinion about Phillips leaving and what it might or might not mean. He basically said look, the NFL coaching carousel is always moving. Its the culture of coaching (and why he happened to leave coaching eventually). And yes, Wade has typically not stayed in one place all that long. He said he would not be surprised at all if Wade initiated the departure. And that if McVay decided to not retain him it was very likely not based on conflict or animosity but simply wanting to shake things up and maybe have a guy he had in mind for a while that could be a fit. In short he said Wade was not fired and do not read much into the move. Its the culture of the NFL.
