Isiah Robertson passed away last night in a car crash. It is a very sad day for me.

I first met Isiah in 1972. I was ten years old, living in Fountain Valley, California, and a proud member of the Rosita Little League Major Dodgers. We were a middling team, nothing extraordinary about us or our season, until one day at practice we noticed a rather large gentlemen jogging through the park where we practiced with two large dobermans. He stopped to watch us for a bit, and then struck up a conversation with our coach. He then came and introduced himself to us, and asked if he could help coach our little league team. I was already a die hard Rams' fan at ten, and here was the reigning defensive rookie of the year in the NFL coaching our baseball team!
The rest of the season, we were the envy of the other teams. Isiah took us to several Angel games to watch "how the pros did it," rented batting cages for us, got us new equipment, and it was the best season ever. He threw us a party at the end of the season that included several other Rams players. It was the best little season ever.
About three years later, a church group I belonged to went to watch a Rams' practice at Cal State Fullerton (I believe). The only autograph I wanted to get was Isiah's. I approached him after practice, and asked him for his autograph. He looked at me for a moment, and I could see that he had a hint of recollection. I told him my name, and called him "Coach." He became so happy, and literally picked me up in the air. He said in front of all my friends that I didn't need an autograph, that we were "friends." He then introduced me to Jack Youngblood and Fred Dryer, and Lance Rentzel of all people. He was also such a kind soul, and did a lot of work with troubled teens after football.
Rest In Peace, Butch.
