"Stopping the run" should no longer be the priority for NFL defenses.

The name of the game in the modern NFL is passing.
This was underlined when at the owners' meetings, yet again, any attempt to modify PI from a spot foul to 15 yards was soundly rebuffed.

Since this is the case, then modern NFL defenses must be built to stop the pass as the priority. The old adage that FIRST we must stop the run is out of date.

It is not that the run doesn't matter; it of course does. But it has more the role (in most cases) of being 1) a way to keep the defense honest and not simply rushing the QB on every down, and 2) it is a way to control the clock when the situation calls for it.

Thus it also changes the kind of players needed. Clearly the Rams D is being built to stop the pass as its top priority. The big, not terribly fast, MLB is becoming a thing of the past unless that same MLB can cover a zone quite well (few can do that). So instead we're seeing MLBs and 3-4 ILBs more in the 230 size range; over grown Safties; guys who can run and who can cover.

I also think that the former prototypical NT.....a 330 + pound immovable rock.....is on its way out. Today that player is at best a 2 down player. But with the NFL doing more passing than ever, mobility matters and so what is more needed a big stout DT that can both plug the run lanes AND get pressure on the QB.

Notice why the Rams went after Suh: here's a guy who is an excellent run stuffer, can control gaps, but also can pressure the QB. He's a 3 down player that is adaptable to whatever down and distance and whatever the offensive philosophy that will be run at him. So where do the Rams intend him to play? At NT.

Why did the Rams keep Barron over Ogletree? Barron is the better pass protector (AND is the more sure tackler).

So those expecting the Rams go after a run stuffing ILB in the draft are going to be disappointed. If they draft ILB it will be a guy(s) that first and foremost can defend the pass. Naturally, they also need to be sure tacklers but don't have to be the stand them up and drop them kind from days of old.

OLBs need to be edge rushers first and foremost. Yes, they need to be able to "set an edge" to some degree; but that is not the priority.

The defense is having to change to match the offense, and that is what Phillips is doing with his 3-4.

being bad against the run is never desirable

I just don't think that solves the problem...
