Parhaps we have a window into his past uneven performances.
When he's on his game, he's very good. I know that a person can drink and hide it - but not forever, drink and think he're controlling it and straighten up, show up for work, and still be impaired a couple of days later. Over time it adds up.
Other substances that don't clear the bloodstream by random testing time? Not the same. The deceptively self-controlled drinker knows how to avoid these. He's too smart for that, too clever.
The drinker who thinks he's hiding it gets successively bolder and deeper into denial over time. Then one day...
Busted for driving over 100 mph and impaired? Leaving the possibilities open he could have been stoked on something else, any number of stimulants or hallucinogenics, but very unlikely. More likely, this incident is not the first but one he built up to over time - mand he just happened to get caught.
Thank God this didn't turn out as another Leonard Little tragedy for Damarcus. In any event he has some inner work to do in the coming offseason, and an nimmediate period of self-imposed discipline for the rest of this season.
My heart goes out to him, I pray for him and wish him all success, victory in confronting whatever-it-is that drives this behavior, and a return to the football field as a revitalized player and rejuvenated human being.
Godspeed, young man. Whatever the football outcomes, this fan is pulling for you, praying for you. May you be grateful for what you have this Thanksgiving.
