Jay Zygmunt did that when overseeing the Rams cap. He felt he was so in tune with the cap, that he felt the Rams could not afford both Leonard Little & London Fletcher, who were both free agents, so they signed Little and pivoted to LB Jamie Duncan because of cost. However, Zygmunt never took the time to contact Fletcher's agents and just ask and tell London how important he was. Fletcher ended up signing with the Bills for a similar contract to Duncan.
That was one of the biggest losses in FA history. I think Zygmunt also relied on Lovie Smith telling him that Duncan could do what Fletcher could do.
Fletcher turns into an all-time great, a true iron man and the heart of the defense.
Ripping that out was a huge part of our descent into the dark ages.
By the way @#$%& Jay Zigmunt.
