My final draft thoughts

April 24, 2024 09:22AM
I am pretty much in the middle of everything farm related right now, so this might be my last bit of "cough" wisdom "cough"
I'll go in order by round unless I forget something.

1. First Round
a) I believe the Rams should go defense, and specifically an EDGE defender. My #1 is Latu on my board and he makes the most sense. My worse case scenario is Latu, Turner and Verse are gone by 19. At that point, I see the Rams trading down. I'm starting to get the feeling Latu is off the board before 19.
b) I think the Rams want to trade up into the top 10ish area, and its either for a top OT like Alt or Fashanu, Rome Odunze, Brock Bowers, A QB, or their top edge.
c) I do think QB is in play. The name that makes the most sense to me is Penix. They have talked to Fautanu and Odunze, so its possible they talked to them a bit about Penix. Penix also fits the McVay mold of a guy not afraid to push the ball down the field and was PFFs top ranked play action QB. I don't think i would take Penix in round 1, but I think its going to take a top 15 pick to get any of the top 6 QBs.
d) I think flying out to Robinson is either a ploy to throw people off the scent of what they are really going to do, or most likely, they think he might be the best fallback option. If Verse and their favorite DT Murphy or Newton are gone and the top 3 edge rushers are gone and they are bent on going D, its really Robinson or bust. Or trade to the back of round 1 and take Darius Robinson.
e) I don't think the Rams will go OL in the 1st, unless they can move up. Fuaga is a OG or maybe a RT, Fautanu may or may not be a OT and is the only fit outside the big 2 OTs. Mims is too raw, Guyton is a RT and Barton is a OG/OC.
f) they aren't drafting: an IOL, off ball backer, safety, RB. They aren't drafting a TE not named Bowers.
g) If the Rams go WR, its seems like Odunze in a move up, or Brian Thomas Jr staying put. AD Mitchell makes no sense, and its too early for any other WR.
e) So who is left: LTs Alt, Fashanu and Fautanu, EDGEs Latu, Turner, Verse or Chop, WRs Odunze and Thomas Jr, TE Bowers or QB Penix Jr. Lastly their are DTs Murphy and Newton. Thats a lot of names, but if I had to guess, it'll be Latu, Robinson, Penix Jr, or Fautanu.

Day 2:
a) I think if the Rams want a WR, they will need to trade up into the top 40 of round 2. Legette and Pearsall making the most sense. The Rams have obviously done their homework on the Washington Huskies, so don't be surprised if they don't end up with a guy like Ja'lynn Polk.
b) If the Rams whiff on an EDGE or go another direction in the first, a name I'd pay close attn to is Marshawn Kneeland. He is gaining steam as a 2nd rounder and the more I dug into him, the more he screams Rams pick.
c) The other position the Rams may look at is DB. They are def. drafting a CB at some point. I htink it will be round 3 or later, but if they go round 2, the 2 names that make the most sense to me are K. Lassiter and M. Melton. Melton really fits what the Rams look for in a CB. Mike Sainristil also makes sense as a slot CB. A ton of sense.
d) Fiske and Jenkins are the only 2 DTs that makes sense in round 2.
e) again, don't expect a TE, SAF, IOL, RB or QB (unless one of the top 6 falls) I also don't think OT here.
f) the other 2 names that fit are A. Isaac and C. Braswell. If they have seen Robinson, they have seen Isaac, and we also know the Rams aren't afraid of Ala. Edge rushers and if they have studied Turner, they have seen Braswell.
g) Round 3 looks wide open. CBs like A. Phillips makes the most sense, as does E. Jones.
h) Edge guys Eliss, Trice and Dorlus (esp as a 5T) make sense. I love Jaylx Hunt, not sure Rams have any interest, but he does fit.
i) if they want Estime, they may have to take him in round 3.
k) I still don't think they go SAF, IOL, OT, or RB outside of Estime.

Day 3:
a) This is where everything goes wonky and players are all over the board, so names get hard to predict.
b) I think the Rams try to acquire a 4th round pick, because everything I have read suggests the draft gets weak after pick 120
c) I expect the Rams to move around (mostly up) so I do not expect them keeping all those later round picks this year
d) They will add DL depth if they haven't yet
e) They should add a kicker somewhere, I doubt they wait until round 7
f) If they double up on edge rushers, keep an eye on J Harrell from Mich and the Murphy twins from UCLA
g) If they dont have a WR or CB yet, they will by the end of day 3, same can be said for RB Jase McClellen is a name to focus on.
h) Im on the fence about TE. They may stay put and look for one in UDFA, same with Safety
i) If they do go safety, it'll be late
j) a versatile OL should be on the to do list
k) throughout the draft, keep an eye on Washington and Mich players this year
l) the new kickoff rules will make a difference in how all the teams draft on day 3.
m) if they start getting short on picks due to trades, ILB is probably out.

Thats all I have. Hope everyone enjoys the draft. Again, questions welcome

Pretty much agree, get edge, if a good one there, but a trade up is fine, too

Was going to ask about Kneeland.
