The thing is this: the Rams are very likely to draft a QB. I doubt earlier than the 3rd, but who knows.
While so many fans come to the Bennett matter as though he was your 14 year old child who stole $50 from your neighbor, and the hope is he will change, this is not that.
Bennett, as a QB, must be the steadiest of leaders in the midst of the worst of adversity. His unexplained absence of his entire rookie season and his strange refusal to explain it (this is called lack of accountability), gives him 2 strikes while standing on a banana peel.
This young man is going to have to be dazzling in camp and display more dedication and maturity than probably any other single player on the team. Naturally McVay would never say that. Neither would any of his teammates. But if Bennett can't dig himself out of a very deep hole, he'll lose out to almost any other QB the Rams bring in who does the work, looks pretty decent, and has no strikes against him.
The Rams in the Snead/McVay era just don't put up with problem children. Which is why (no doubt) someone like DeVante Sweat is no longer on their board despite his freaky size and upside potential.
Not sure why the Rams are being so forgiving to Bennett. But, I have no doubt that the bar is set very high for him such that his odds of clearing it are pretty small.
