Were the Rams Fooling Themselves with Pat Haden?

January 31, 2024 12:09PM
Last night I went back and watched The Mud Bowl in 12/26/1977

I listened to this game on the radio…It was Dick Enberg’s last call…it was Harold Jackson’s last game with the Rams…It was the last time Lawrence McCutcheon was a top-flight back…and it was Chuck’s Knox’s last game…

But as I was watching it on YouTube…and maybe it’s age…maybe it’s because I’ve literally written a thousand game stories covering football…maybe it’s because you continue to learn and weren’t nuanced enough to understand what sportswriters of that day were saying…

But the Rams, and everyone, was kidding themselves if they thought Pat Haden was really the answer in getting the team to the Super Bowl…

I have to wonder what Malavasi was thinking…What were Dryer, the Youngbloods, Larry Brooks, Jack Reynolds, Cromwell, Thomas, Perry….Mack…what were they thinking when they saw Haden play…Watching The Mud Bowl, the Vikings' Bob Lee was by far the better quarterback.
