I like tough teams and I wish McVay’s teams were tough (he’s getting there, but he’s leaving behind a soft team reputation). Back to the point.
At some point the payoff of putting your team in a position where they have to assert their dominance fails in the face of chance. There are things no one has control of: phantom offside’s call on Tom Mack against the Vikings near the goal line as a random example.
But when these forced situations don’t get it done—inspite of great exertion by the team—the team gets discouraged and the buck up, show your manhood mentality works against you.
Here’s the biggest flop on Dan Campbell’s part: He could have kicked an extra point against Dallas, possibly winning the game in OT and then hosting this very game with his home town fans in Detroit cheering him on!!!
But he stubbornly went to 2 three times in a row and put extra pressure on his team today on the road.
The Lions held up to the pressure for the most part. But Sun Tzu would shake his head at a general making the path to victory harder than it had to be.
