The idea that Kickers will be perfect and never miss makeable FGs is not reasonable.
Sure, there are the elite ones that will hardly ever miss, but they are like the elite of any other players. Even the elite of any position will have failures. Just fewer of them.
But, like all elite players, elite Kickers cost the most. And, like with all other positions, in the hard cap era you have to pick and choose where to spend the money.
The problem is, I think, that when a Kicker is out there he is in the spotlight and a lot rests on his shoulders. So a mistimed snap and hold, or a bobbled hold, can make the Kicker look bad. And on the stat sheet the Kicker still gets the ding as a missed FG no matter whose fault it is, just like the QB gets dinged for an incomplete pass when the WR drops the ball. Or an INT because the WR runs the route poorly.
