Thanls for the clarifications JY53.
To carry it further, givenwhatyou know as per av bove, how do you break down Blackburn's coaching? With no rewind capacity and only TV one-time broadcast view of the field, I'm in a quandry.
That said, I don't recall the player'sname butbackin the day I believe Bones lobbied foraguy thatwent on the roster according to his position (as theyall do) but was there becaauseBoneswantedhim s a special teams ace.
Another I know of personally is RB Chase Reynolds from University of Montana. He only played a few downs in the backfield his whole career, but was kept on the special teams roster and played in virtually every game of his four or five year career.
they are different because the kickoff game is different. That used to be vital. Now, if they here a certain thud there is a high likelihood it will be a touchback. And because there is no longer a 4-man wedge you don't need that animal type to be a wedge buster..
I don't know what Blackburn does. Maybe he is a bad coach. Maybe he's a good coach and the players just blow assignments. That would also relate to them not trying fakes. If you cannot execute coverage maybe they are not trusted to execute a fake.
It could also be with different guys on the active roster each week new guys have to play STs. They did well in practice but not in the game.
The kicker, IMO, is another story. That's almost all on the kicker. How can a coach get into a kicker's head. The kicker knows he can make every PAT but why don't they? Is it concentration. Is it they just miss the kick like people miss a golf swing. Even PGA guys his trives into the rough or a second shot. It's hard.
I find the 'coach 'em up' idea is based people thinking a coach can work magic. In the NFL the level of competition is also great. Some return guys are simple a mismatch for special teams guys.
How do we know that when Ron Brown returned kicks for TDs that the coverage for them wasn't excellent. But he was able to get corners on guys that were no match for his speed?
