Kicker and return man aren't vital to coverage, and that's where Rams ST are deficient. Get an electric return man (who can do it behind flimsy blocking) and a kicker who is money inside of 60 yards and the Rams ST coverage weaknesses would still be there.
NOW: Is that on the coach or are we playing shoot-the-messenger when STs are not delivering due to things we don't know, including:
1. Do we have special teams specialists on the roster?
We have guys who made the team as backups because they were good on STs, IMO - Hummel, Skow, etc
2. Can the ST coach use starters or backups from other units on special teams?
Yes, starters play on STs -- Johnson III, Spoon, Hoecht, Rozeboom, Fuller, Jonah Williams,
3. Do the Rams draft for special teamers?
Don't think so, but it has to be part of the evaluation ... outside kicker and punter
4. How much does the Rams special teams roster fluctuate throughout the season?
kickoff team fluctuates the most
5. Does the coach get sufficient practice time with his special teams units during season, and sufficient camp time to develop ST units before the first game?
Not like they used to, but teams pretty much have the same mount if time.
I, for one, don't know. But until I do I can't really join any movement to lynch the coach
