How bout that opening drive of the Ravens game??? CRUISED through them like a white hot knife through butter via the run. And then.......three useless passes close to the goal. The Ravens WERE on their heels. .
Ravens played nickel defense on all those plays. Then they finally counted with a base defense. McVay didn't want to run versus a base defense -- so he passed.
But there was a reason he did it. He just didn't give up running the app to go pas happy.
Had Ravens gone with a base defense at midfield, Rans would have passed at midfield. McVay called to runs because in the 11 personnel Ravens counter with nickel but Rams WRs block as well as some tight ends, so Rams 11 personnel can PLAY like 12 personnel.
So, that is an advantage for Rams - their 11 can be an 11 or a de fact 12.
Now if you want to talk generally, that's one thing. But you brought up that game so the details need to be considered.
