I like watching football games played in a little mud. Not sloppy mud, just mud. With a wet football.
That's what I grew up watching in an era before greenhouse stadiums. Most autumn days were dull and dreary, and they made for some great football. Real football.
It answers the questions: Which receivers can catch and hang onto a football, and who can't? Which offensive linemen can set a block? Stuff like that.
I look for
outstanding games from Avila, Dotson, Havs, hopefully Jackson (his lack of lateral mobility will be offset by his brute strength - I hope), and (drumroll.............)
Freeman. He is made for such a time as this.
Oof. Whump.And
Williams....I wanna hear the annouce say, He's still up,
legs keep driving, he's free! He's still on his feet! He's gaining more yards! On defense, who really knows how to tackle? When uniforms are slippery and the footing isn't there to launch a shoulder hit, who is it that knows how to square up, wrap, and bring down?
And, (shudder)
which coaches can adjust their playcalling to match the conditions?
Strategically, I'd like to see what the above implies on offense, with
Stafford throwing short and sharp and spreading the ball around.
Kupp, Puka, and Robinson - and maybe, just possibly, but I can't get my hopes too far up for fear of disappointment,
Adams at TE?
On D our front five should do well. Real well. So should Jones in the middle. D backs? Everything evens out for the first few seconds of play, but the longer Lamar has to run around on a wet field, the more the advantage tips toward him. Read on...
I wonder if some of our safeties could chase Lamar around, with mud as an equalizer, and catch him? I'd like to see Morris try to find out -
blitz Lamar.
